Doctor-led laser hair removal for life outdoors in the Whitsundays

Candela laser hair removal

Candela laser hair removal

Whitsunday life involves many wonderful days out on the boat or in the water, prompting many locals to consider laser hair removal. Whitsunday Cosmedics Skin Clinic offers doctor-led laser hair removal using the Candela GentleLASETM, which uses a 755 nm Alexandrite laser to generate heat, which helps to reduce future hair growth and is suitable for almost all skin types. A two-centre study of 948 patients found that this technology was able to reduce unwanted hair by 75-90% over 3 sessions, depending on treatment area. When followed-up more than a decade later, 89% of patients said the results had been sustained. If you’re tired of shaving and waxing, or concerned about unwanted hair, the starting point is a consultation with our doctor-led team.

What to expect from

laser hair removal treatment

Hair grows in cycles, and the laser targets follicles during their active growth phase, which is why laser hair removal works best as a course of treatments rather than a single session.

At your initial laser hair removal consultation, your treating practitioner will:

  • Assess your skin type, hair colour, and the area you’d like treated
  • Find out if you have sensitive skin or allergies
  • Make sure you’re not planning a pregnancy, currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Recommend a treatment plan based on your individual circumstances.

Before your treatment, avoid sun exposure to the treatment area for at least two weeks. If you’ve had recent sun exposure or sunburn, your appointment will need to be rescheduled — this is a clinical requirement, not just a precaution.

After your treatment, sun protection is essential. Apply sunscreen every morning and reapply throughout the day (you’ll need it with you at all times).

Laser vs IPL - what's the difference?

Alexandrite laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) both use light energy to target pigment in the hair follicle but there are some key differences.

Alexandrite laser

Highly targeted: uses a dedicated 755 nm wavelength

Long-term hair reduction: 35-84%*

IPL

More diffuse: wavelength can vary from 590–1,200 nm.

Long-term hair reduction: 27-53%*

*According to a 2022 systematic review of 5 randomised controlled trials involving 233 patients.
